FAQ's
Do I really need to apply silicone to the locking nut during install?
Silicone/RTV will provide some lubricity to the threads when installing, and then will keep any corrosion out of the threads. This will also keep the locking nut from walking off over time. Silicone or RTV is a great thread locker that is easily removed if needed.
Do I need the installation tool or can I just use regular wrenches?
We highly recommend the installation tool, but the Buoy Beacon was also designed to be installed using regular wrenches any boat typically has on board. Without the installation tool install can be a bit awkward and slower, and may be more likely to leak by not being able to get as tight as you could with the installation tool.
Is the dielectric grease really necessary?
Dielectric grease is critical in maintaining the Buoy Beacon. This will keep the battery spring from corroding. It also helps the O-ring on the battery plug seat, keeps the threads lubricated, and adds another layer of protection from water seeping in.
What should I do if my light is staying on or blinking slower then it should?
Remove the batteries, let it sit for 10 seconds, and reinstall. This should reset the light. It is possible it will need to be repeated.
My Light won't turn on at all, what should I do?
First make sure the light is in the dark. If it sense's to much ambient light, it will stay off. If the light has been neglected, there is a chance the battery spring could be rusted and not making good contact with the positive side of the batteries. you may try removing the rust by lightly brushing with a stainless steel or brass brush. The battery plug could also be corroded or oxidized. You can use a scotch bright or wire brush on the grounding nipple to assure a good ground. How long will the batteries last?
The batteries should last ~21 days. Battery Life will vary depending on how many daylight hours there are, ambient temps, and what D battery is used. Not all batteries are created equal. For maximum run time, we recommend Procell Intense. Any 1.5v D cell alkaline battery will work.
My buoy slowly loses air but the locking nut is tight?
More then likely there is some buoy material in the threads and is making the locking nut feel like it's tight, but isn't clamping on the buoy as well as it needs to. Make sure the buoy material is pushed all the way down around the base of the threads.
